Session Description:
Don’t fall overboard! An active legislature, plaintiff-friendly judges, and an active plaintiff’s bar have increased the risk of employment law mistakes sinking your ship. Tricky rules regarding job postings, noncompetition, and meal and rest periods now risk staggering class action damages. Also learn to navigate new 2026 laws on background checks, paid family medical leave, personnel files, reductions in force, sick leave, and more. Attendees will learn key compliance requirements and develop a list of action items.
Goals:
- Evaluate and prioritize policy updates to avoid automatic liability, including PFML, personnel files, sick leave, and background check procedures.
- Review job posting, outside employment policies, and meal and rest period compliance requirements to mitigate class action risk.
- Assess areas where immediate management training and procedural updates are needed to ensure internal compliance with new laws.
Presenter(s) Description:
Catharine is a litigation partner in the firm’s Seattle office, representing local and national employers in litigation in state and federal courts, on appeal, and also before the EEOC, DOL, and similar state agencies in all aspects of workplace law, from discrimination to wage-hour compliance. Catharine believes in working closely with clients to address workplace issues proactively. She uses her litigation experience to work closely with clients across all industries to provide effective preventive counseling and workforce training. She also has substantial class action experience, particularly defending meal/rest periods and job posting complaints.
